Gambling

Gambling can be an exciting pleasure, but it also carries certain risks that can lead to addiction and create numerous problems. Gambling problems often remain “invisible” to family and others, and sometimes even to the person with the problem due to failure to recognize it.

Warning Signs of Gambling Problems

  • Withdrawal from family, friends, and usual activities
  • Increasing gambling behavior, spending more money
  • Lying about the amount of time spent gambling
  • Gambling to relax and forget about problems
  • Gambling becomes the only and dominant activity
  • Money intended for rent, food, etc., is spent on gambling
  • Gambling to reduce stress

People with gambling problems may have some of the following thoughts:

  • “Gambling is an easy way to make money”
  • “I’m smart and this can’t happen to me”
  • “This is a solution to my problems”
  • “I can always win back my money”
  • “The more I gamble, the better my chances of winning”
  • “My gambling is under control”

Some people may develop addictions to alcohol or drugs, and some may also become trapped in gambling problems. The consequences can be numerous.

Remember

  • Find a balance between gambling and other activities
  • Never gamble when you are stressed
  • Never consume alcohol while gambling
  • Never gamble if it involves borrowing money
  • Set a limit on how much you will spend before you start gambling, and stop when you reach it, regardless of whether you are winning or losing
  • If there are concerns from family about your gambling, a problem likely already exists
